The Australian High Commission and Sarawak Government have brought Operation SEMUT commemorations to Kuching.

Our Deputy High Commissioner joined the Premier of Sarawak in Kuching to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Operation SEMUT, which saw Australian parachuters land in Sarawak to work with local communities towards the end of World War II.
Dignitaries witnessed a re-enactment of the parachute landings by Tentera Udara Diraja Malaysia (Royal Malaysian Air Force) and traditional Sarawakian cultural performances.
It’s important that we commemorate our shared history to ensure these stories can be passed on to future generations. Australia and Malaysia have a longstanding defence partnership that will endure well into the future
Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Danielle Heinecke and Australian Defence Advisor, Colonel Corey Shillabeer attended the 80th International Commemoration of the 1945 Operation Semut Parachute Landings at the Bario Memorial Park on Monday.
The commemoration programme, which was officiated by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, also featured a reenactment of the 1945 Operation Semut in Bario.
