Regional peacekeeping exercise

LCDR Shagruza bin Sahari and MAJ Norhisham bin Hassan are currently in Thailand as part of the regional peacekeeping exercise, PIRAP JABIRU, which is co-hosted by Australia and Thailand during 21 May – 1 June 2018.

They have been invited to participate by the Australian Defence force, along with with colleagues from 24 countries across the region. This is the 10th biennial PIRAP JABIRU exercise, which has been conducted by Australia and Thailand since 1998. It brings together more than 100 students and staff from military, police and government organisations that would normally work in a UN peacekeeping mission and reflects the contemporary multinational nature of peacekeeping.

Participants are tested by realistic scenario-based problems that reflect contemporary UN peace operations. This includes how to protect vulnerable populations such as women and children, understanding peacekeepers’ rights and obligations under international and domestic law, and how to sustain logistics support in often austere environments.
